The night was going pretty well, Cole decided, looking around the table. David had been a bit shy at first, but Cole couldn’t blame him for that. The guys had apparently gotten a pretty early start on the night, and by the time Cole and David had arrived, Rob was already making out with some stranger, his hand right down the guy’s pants in full view of the whole table, and Marco and Sasha were voguing. Cole was pretty certain they were doing it ironically, but he wasn’t sure David realized that. Cole had only made it three-quarters of the way to the table before he’d detoured sharply, dragging David with him. “We need to get caught up,” he’d said, heading for the bar. “Shots.”

David had laughed agreeably and done three shots of tequila without fuss, and now he was nestled in at their table, locked in an animated discussion with Casey and Bryce, possibly about hockey. Sasha eased his leather-clad ass onto the chair next to Cole and leaned into him. “Your boy’s doing just fine, Cole. You can stop babysitting him.”

“I’m not babysitting. And he’s not my boy.”

“Really?” Sasha didn’t sound convinced. “He’s just your type. All straight-acting and preppy. That’s how you like ’em, right?”

“I enjoy spending time with a variety of ‘types’, Sasha,” Cole tried, but Sasha just grinned at him, and then licked his ear. When Sasha got drunk, he got very licky. It used to gross Cole out, but he’d come to accept it over the years.

“Well, if you don’t want him, maybe I’ll take him for a spin,” Sasha decided.

Cole knew it was a test. He could feel Sasha’s gaze, waiting for his reaction, and he just shook his head and smiled. “He’s pretty new to all this—don’t break him.”

“That is a disappointing answer, Cole. I was hoping you were finally over your stupid thing with that asshole in Narnia, finally moving on…”

“I am! I’m over, and I’m on. I just don’t think it makes sense to go from a totally closeted guy to one who’s still…well, who might have stepped out briefly, but who could bolt back in at any moment.”

“Not even if he’s just your type? And if he’s been staring at you all night, looking like he wanted to drag you back to his place and…well, I will leave the rest to your imagination.” Another lick, slower this time, on Cole’s neck just beneath his ear. It tickled, and Cole squirmed away, laughing. Sasha leaned back in his chair and grinned triumphantly. “Not even if I tell you that he’s looking totally jealous right now? If I say I think he might be about to come over here and start a fight with me for daring to touch his boy?”

Cole refused to look. “I’m not his boy. And he’s probably just grossed out by your lack of oral hygiene. Seriously, any given night, how many people do you lick? How many germs can you pick up that way?”

“Don’t change the subject, sweetie.
